The Company for the Reconstruction and Development of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem is the only fully government-owned company within the Old City. Founded in 1969 following the reunification of Jerusalem, the company functions as a branch of government, carrying out government policies in the Old City of Jerusalem. The company owns approximately 133,000 m2 of real estate within the Old City walls (the expropriation zone) as well as approximately another 17,500 m2 outside of the city walls. Serving as a housing company, the company carries out: property and real estate registration, assignment and transfer of rights, expropriation lawsuits, ownership claims via the ownership committee, evictions and real estate bookkeeping.
The company has a tourism department that runs tourist attractions, museums and tours throughout the Old City and Jerusalem.
The company also has a division for planning and executing infrastructural projects, reconstruction and development of public buildings and environmental development.
- The company was established in order to restore the Jewish Quarter and develop it as a national, religious, historical and cultural site while highlighting its unique character and nature.
- Efforts to re-establish the Jewish population of the Quarter took place for around 16 years and so far 600 families have been housed there.
- The Quarter is home to over 40 educational institutions, colleges, ancient synagogues, institutes, a hostel, museums and visitor centers.
- A variety of stores and businesses operate within the Quarter, including some in the tourism sector. The company sees these as full partners in the development of the area.
